Power Management System

This design required the management of over 5kW of DC power.  Some of the primary features are a switching architecture that, based on a number of inputs, would determine from what source to draw power from.  Then, depending upon the selected source, it would perform auxiliary functions and conditioning operations on the sources that were not in use.  This management is performed via an embedded processing unit and is fully autonomous from user interaction.  This design merged interactions from three-phase high frequency outputs, high and low voltage DC supplies as well as standard AC supplies commonly found in residential and commercial applications.

On of the key requirements for this design is to insure uninterrupted power to the user, thus imposing the requirement that any high power switching between sources occurs quickly enough that any interruptions in power are not detected by the end user.  This high speed performance required the use of solid state technology, which in turn, required adequate thermal management and close attention to overall efficiencies due to the large amount of overall power being consumed.
